mecha movie montage

this is my spot for mecha movie reviews, originally posted on my tumblr under #marbles weekly movie, weekly is a loose term. i guess MAL is good to put here too.

The Ideon: A Contact (1982)

6/10

27th DEC 2025 its been a couple weeks but tonight’s movie night :] i watched The Ideon: A Contact (1982). we continue the trend of animated mecha movies that only feature the occasional mech scene. although! this mech was very cute (its lil ear things and the visor r top tier) & i liked a lot of the destructive animation. plus the general ship designs were pretty cool.

almost incomprehensible pacing–almost, combined with nothing being well-explained was a little torturous. i liked what it was Trying to do, i think, and with some re-framing it couldve been pretty gripping. maybe its because there are so many characters (Bes was my favourite) and no scenes establishing any kind of connections. the movie just thrusts you in and you have to keep up. the inciting incident is kinda bullshit & despite events happening i felt like by the end of the movie nothing had actually been achieved (nothing set up means no pay off) lmao. some good music, cute flying frogs, colourful explosions, cool title card design. 6/10 (is maybe a little generous but w/e)

Patlabor 2: The Movie (1993)

5/10

11th DEC 2025 weekly movie got pushed back a bit but i am here! with my thoughts on patlabor 2, it was…. eh. fine. i loved the music (i’d listened to it previously) and ofc the animation was beautiful, feeling perverse about the mechanical detail. loved all the vehicle & tech design and animation and the labors are cute in their little outfits, i wish we saw more of them!! that seems to be a running theme with these movies lol. i liked the artsy shit that was going on with the bird themes and when action actually happened it was cool as fuck; i really liked the F16 interception section that was my fave sequence.

the main guy was cute, but i found everyone else pretty dry. it was a movie that enjoyed talking at you while showing pretty visuals and i was really hoping for more character in the, y'know, characters (and more robots but what can u do). while i can reflect on the whole story now, watching it felt very, shudder-y? and very slow, but i feel that is how political plots can be.

my memory is a bit hazy on patlabor 1 but i would rewatch that over this one. 5/10 ((says 'meh' then goes on a rant about all the shit i liked 🙄))

Venus Wars (1989)

8/10

1st DEC 2025 tonight was venus wars and it was p good! i live skeeted it on bsky on a whim. i liked the vehicle design and the bgs were beautiful, cool world building although w some holes. 100+ mins is p crazy but it kept pace most of the time, 8/10 good destruction, not crazy about any of the characters tho

The Five Star Stories (1989)

7/10

approx. 24th NOV 2025 the five star stories and i gave that a 7/10 i liked the gore and the tanks and the giant robots even if they were only in it for like 5mins at the end, its definitely flawed but clearly a highly condensed version of the first manga vol so i cant be mad
